Exposure and Response Prevention

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of psychotherapy that aims to
reduce anxiety by gradually exposing individuals to feared situations or objects. ERP is
often used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as it helps individuals to resist
the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors that temporarily relieve anxiety but
ultimately reinforce obsessive thoughts and increase distress.

ERP involves developing a hierarchy of feared situations, with exposure gradually
increasing in difficulty as individuals gain greater mastery and control over their anxiety.
By repeatedly confronting feared situations, individuals can learn that the anxiety and
distress they experience is not as intense or long-lasting as they initially feared. ERP
may also involve cognitive restructuring, which helps individuals to challenge and
reframe negative thoughts and beliefs that contribute to anxiety.

At Anxiety and Behavioral Health Psychotherapy, we offer ERP services tailored to your
individual needs and preferences. Our team can provide guidance and support as you
navigate the challenging but rewarding process of confronting your fears and
overcoming anxiety. Contact us today to learn more about how ERP can help you
achieve lasting relief from anxiety and improve your quality of life.
